Scenario-Based eLearning Experience

This scenario-based eLearning concept project helps new teachers incorporate linguistically responsive practices to support English language learners.

Audience: New teachers

Responsibilities: Instructional Design, eLearning Development, Graphic Design, Storyboarding, Action Mapping, Prototyping

Tools Used: Articulate Storyline 360, Adobe XD, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, MindMeister, Google Suite

The Problem

New teachers are struggling to provide an effective learning experience for English language learners, resulting in low academic achievement. After analyzing the performance problem, I confirmed that there was a need to address teaching practices in regards to native language responsiveness and teaching materials.

The Solution

To solve the problem, I proposed a series of scenario-based eLearning experiences addressing culturally and linguistically responsive practices, as well as 1-on-1 mentoring with an experienced coach. The solution I highlighted in this project is focused mainly on linguistically responsive teaching in regards to English language learners.

My Process

I consulted with a subject matter expert (SME) and referenced my own experiences as a bilingual educator to define  the goal and identify scenarios that new teachers usually face. After establishing the overall goal, we outlined the best practices that could solve the problem.

Action Map

I worked with the subject matter expert (SME) to develop an action map to identify high-priority actions that would best address the problem. We focused on specific behaviors required from teachers in order to increase English language learners’ performance.

Text-based Storyboard

Once the high-priority actions were identified, I developed a text-based storyboard to guide the project. The storyboard was created based on three high-priority actions that included one correct choice and two incorrect choices to illustrate real-life consequences. To further immerse the audience, I introduced a mentor character that guides the learner by providing useful information for each scenario.

Visual Mockups

After revising the text-based storyboard, I created a mood board and style guide in Adobe XD. I also edited multiple assets in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop in order to communicate consistent visuals. This included modifying shapes, recoloring elements, adding/deleting layers, and merging assets. Additionally, I iterated on wireframes and mockups to determine the placement of elements, incorporating visual design principles, such as alignment, balance and emphasis.

Interactive Prototype

I created an interactive prototype in Articulate Storyline 360 using the visual mockups and text-based storyboard to collect feedback on the learning experience. This prototype consisted of several interactive slides and the initial scenario-based questions. I also added sounds to make the experience more engaging.

Full Development

After receiving feedback from the prototype and applying it, I developed the final product.
